Mum and Dad are getting married
I wrote this poem for our wedding. My husband and I were engaged years ago, but decided to have children before a wedding. I’m glad we did — it meant that our children were part of our day, as were those of our friends. I wrote this for the ceremony, to be read by my brother in law.
Mum and dad are getting married today
It’s called a Wedding, I think.
I have to dress up in clean clothes and shoes and make sure I don’t pick my nose.
Mum says there will be cake and lots of kids to play with
But I have to sit still for a little while at the beginning
And listen to The Serious Bit.
I have to carry a ring up to the front for mummy to give to daddy
I said I could just give it to him
And save her the trouble.
Mum and dad are getting married in front of all their friends
And family too. Everyone is coming to see them say ‘I do’.
Because they are So Happy
For my mum and dad. And they get free food.
Mum and dad are getting married and they get to do a dance
I’ve seen them dancing in the kitchen
On Sunday mornings. I hope they’ve done more practicing…
Mum and dad are getting married so they can be Together Forever.
I am not sure where else they would be.
They are much better when they are two
Together
When daddy goes away mummy is always tired and shouts a lot and buys extra bottles of gin
When mummy goes away we get to watch movies and eat chips and pizza and popcorn
Because daddy is a sucker
But I think he likes it better
When mummy is here.
Mum and dad are getting married because they Love Each Other
But I knew that
So what’s the fuss?
